Case Study

Community, Nonprofit & Social Impact

Digital platforms and tools for charities, social enterprises, and community organisations making a difference.

The Challenge

Community organisations, charities, and nonprofits operate under intense resource constraints. They need digital platforms that can engage supporters, coordinate volunteers, raise awareness, and demonstrate impact, but rarely have the budgets or in-house technical teams to build and maintain complex systems. Off-the-shelf solutions often fall short of their specific needs, while enterprise tools are prohibitively expensive.

Many social impact organisations also face the challenge of reaching diverse audiences, from potential donors and volunteers to the communities they serve. Their digital presence needs to tell a compelling story, provide practical information, and facilitate real action, whether that is signing up to volunteer, making a donation, or finding local support services. Accessibility and inclusivity are paramount, as these platforms must work for everyone regardless of technical ability or device.

Our Approach

Digital Tactics has supported community and nonprofit organisations throughout its history, often contributing pro bono or at reduced rates to causes that align with our values. Our approach is pragmatic: we select the most cost-effective technology stack for each project, frequently using WordPress for content-managed sites and bespoke PHP for more specialised applications. We design for long-term sustainability, ensuring that non-technical staff can maintain and update platforms independently after launch.

For data-driven social impact projects, we build interactive tools that make complex information accessible and actionable. Our mapping and visualisation work has helped organisations communicate geographic data about economic conditions, community services, and environmental factors in ways that drive policy discussions and public engagement.

  • WordPress and PHP platforms designed for non-technical content editors with minimal ongoing maintenance costs
  • Interactive data visualisation and mapping tools for social and economic research
  • Community engagement platforms with volunteer coordination and event management features
  • Accessible, mobile-responsive designs that work for all users regardless of technical ability

Projects & Clients

Our work with VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas), one of the world's leading international development charities, involved building digital tools to support their volunteer programmes and global operations. Flood Support was a community response platform created to help people affected by flooding find local assistance, report conditions, and coordinate relief efforts. Linux Brighton is a community user group we helped establish an online presence for, supporting the local open-source technology community.

Buddies Link was a social connection platform designed to combat loneliness by matching people with shared interests in their local area. Brighton's Big Screen was a community events initiative requiring a public-facing website for outdoor screenings and cultural events. Give a Pet a Home was an animal rehoming platform connecting rescue organisations with potential adopters. Living Wage Map Britain and Business Map Britain were interactive data visualisation projects that mapped economic data across the UK, providing tools for researchers, policymakers, and journalists to explore patterns in wages and business distribution.

A standout project with VSO was a personalised video email campaign featuring veteran newscaster Jon Snow, an ex-VSO volunteer. To drive donor retention, we built an automated video mail-merge system that personalised thank-you videos for each new donor. The system allows VSO to upload donor contact data in bulk (CSV/Excel), automatically geocodes each record to extract the donor's locality, then compiles personalised graphics into a unique VSO-branded video thanking each donor by name in a "live broadcast" from their hometown. Each video is uploaded as an unlisted YouTube video, with a personalised HTML email sent via VSO's bulk email provider.

The campaign increased donor engagement by over 50%, doubling the results of previous automated thank-you emails. YouTube delivery also boosted engagement with VSO's wider channel content, expanding reach beyond their core donor base. The entire system runs on-demand using AWS cloud servers at just $0.13 per hour during video generation, delivering an exceptionally high ROI for the campaign with negligible ongoing operational costs.
