The Challenge
The construction and engineering sector faces a distinctive set of digital challenges. Projects span years, involve dozens of subcontractors, and generate vast quantities of data from sensors, surveys, inspections, and environmental monitoring. The tools available to manage this data are often fragmented, with critical information trapped in spreadsheets, proprietary hardware systems, or siloed departmental databases that do not communicate with each other.
Engineering consultancies and monitoring companies need real-time visibility into site conditions, structural health, and environmental parameters. Traditional approaches relying on manual readings, paper-based reporting, and periodic site visits introduce delays that can compromise safety and inflate costs. The sector demands platforms that are robust enough for mission-critical monitoring, flexible enough to accommodate project-specific requirements, and accessible to field teams using mobile devices in challenging conditions.
Our Approach
Digital Tactics has worked with construction and engineering organisations for over a decade, building bespoke platforms that address the specific operational realities of the sector. Our approach starts with understanding the data flows and decision points that matter most, whether that is real-time structural monitoring on a major infrastructure project or automating survey data processing for a geotechnical consultancy.
We build systems that collect data from diverse sources, including IoT sensors, 3D scanners, cameras, and manual inputs, then process, store, and present that data through intuitive web-based dashboards. Our platforms are designed for reliability, with redundant data paths, alerting systems, and offline-capable field interfaces where connectivity is unreliable.
- Real-time sensor data ingestion and processing pipelines for structural and environmental monitoring
- 3D point cloud processing, digital twin creation, and spatial data visualisation tools
- Bespoke operational management systems with role-based access, audit trails, and automated reporting
- IoT device management, remote camera integration, and edge computing solutions for site deployments
Projects & Clients
Our longest-running construction sector partnership is with SOCOTEC, the global testing, inspection, and certification company. We built and continue to maintain Calyx Prime, their core operational management system, and Calyx OMS, their real-time monitoring platform used on critical infrastructure projects including Crossrail, HS2, and Thames Tideway. These platforms process thousands of sensor readings daily and provide engineers with instant alerts when thresholds are breached.
In the 3D scanning and geospatial space, we developed the scanning software and web platform for 3dYu and built data processing tools for Plowman Craven, one of the UK's leading survey and measurement firms. Our work with SLATE Technologies produced spatial data analysis tools, while 4D Reality (4D.me) saw us create point cloud processing pipelines. We also built the SurveyScience.ai platform, applying machine learning to survey data classification. Additional construction sector projects include remote camera monitoring systems for Extech and environmental sensor networks deployed across multiple sites.
Results & Impact
- Multi-year partnership with SOCOTEC supporting monitoring on nationally significant infrastructure projects including Crossrail and HS2
