The Challenge
Education and science communication present unique digital challenges. Learning platforms must engage users of widely varying ages and abilities, from primary school children practising phonics to postgraduate researchers exploring complex scientific concepts. The content is often interactive, requiring careful user experience design to ensure that the technology supports rather than hinders the learning process.
Academic institutions and science organisations also face the challenge of making research accessible to broader audiences. Complex scientific data, experimental techniques, and theoretical concepts need to be presented through intuitive digital interfaces that encourage exploration and understanding. Budget constraints in the education sector add further pressure, requiring solutions that deliver maximum impact without enterprise-level investment.
Our Approach
Digital Tactics has a long history of working with educational and scientific organisations, dating back to some of our earliest projects. Our approach centres on understanding how learners and researchers actually interact with content, then building platforms that make those interactions as frictionless and engaging as possible. We work closely with subject matter experts to ensure the technology faithfully represents the underlying educational or scientific content.
For interactive learning platforms, we build responsive web applications with rich front-end experiences using JavaScript and modern browser capabilities. For science communication projects, we focus on data visualisation, multimedia integration, and content management systems that allow non-technical academics to publish and update material independently.
- Interactive learning applications with age-appropriate interfaces and progressive difficulty scaling
- Science communication platforms with rich media, data visualisation, and academic content management
- Conference and event management tools for academic communities
- Accessible, responsive designs that work across classroom devices, tablets, and desktops
Projects & Clients
Phonics Play is one of the UK's most widely used phonics teaching resources, relied upon by thousands of primary schools. We built and maintained their interactive learning platform, which delivers structured phonics programmes through engaging games and activities designed for children aged 4-7. The platform needed to handle significant concurrent usage during school hours while remaining simple enough for young learners to navigate independently.
Our science communication work includes projects for some of the most respected names in the field. We built kroto.info, the educational website for Nobel Prize-winning chemist Sir Harry Kroto, and developed platforms for the Vega Science Trust, which produces science lectures and interviews. The Quantum Science project delivered interactive visualisations of quantum mechanics concepts. E-Equation and Chalcogenides were specialist educational tools for chemistry and materials science. Experimental Techniques provided digital resources for laboratory methods. Conference Advisor was a scheduling and management tool for academic conferences, and netlab was an early network laboratory simulation platform.
