The Challenge
Critical infrastructure monitoring demands systems that can ingest, process, and visualise vast volumes of sensor data in real time. Construction sites, environmental monitoring stations, and industrial facilities generate continuous streams of measurements from hundreds or thousands of sensors, each requiring different processing pipelines, alert thresholds, and visualisation approaches.
Legacy monitoring systems in this space are often desktop-based, inflexible, and unable to scale with modern deployment requirements. Engineers in the field need mobile-responsive, browser-based access to live data with sophisticated charting, geographic mapping, and automated alerting -- all without the constraints of installed software.
Our Approach
Digital Tactics built the Calyx platform family for SOCOTEC (formerly ITM Monitoring), creating a next-generation data processing and visualisation system for geotechnical and structural monitoring. Calyx replaced the aging Argus system with a modern, browser-based platform capable of handling complex sensor data workflows at scale.
The platform architecture supports sensor data import and export across multiple formats, engineering calculations and data processing pipelines, multi-channel alert systems with configurable thresholds, and technical charting using Highcharts and D3 visualisations. Geographic sensor maps built with Leaflet.js provide spatial context, while automated PDF report generation delivers formatted outputs for engineering review. The tablet-responsive interface ensures field engineers can access live data from any location.
- Multi-format sensor data ingestion with configurable processing pipelines
- Real-time charting with Highcharts and D3, geographic mapping with Leaflet.js
- Automated alerting, PDF report generation, and BIM integration
- Raspberry Pi-based remote diagnostics and camera monitoring systems
Projects & Clients
The Calyx OMS platform delivered monitoring solutions for Crossrail (Europe's largest construction project) and London Victoria Station, demonstrating capability to handle critical infrastructure monitoring at the highest levels of engineering complexity. Calyx Prime extended the platform with enhanced processing and reporting capabilities for SOCOTEC's expanding client base.
Beyond the core Calyx work, our IoT and remote monitoring experience includes the Remote Camera Monitoring system for live site surveillance, Raspberry Pi Diagnostics for edge computing and hardware health monitoring, the Digital Canary environmental sensing platform, and Aeroplane Tracking data aggregation. Each project demanded reliable data collection from distributed sensor networks with real-time processing and visualisation.
The Calyx platform was built atop Zend Framework 2 (ZF2), selected to provide a well-tested enterprise baseline that facilitated automated testing, quality control, and reliable code extensibility -- a significant improvement over the proprietary nature of the legacy Argus codebase. MySQL was retained with an optimised schema for relational analysis, with provision for NoSQL technologies in future big data applications. The frontend was rebuilt using Bootstrap, Angular.js, Leaflet.js, Highcharts, D3, jQuery, and DataTables to deliver a modern, plugin-free browser experience.
Development followed a phased programme of works timed to key industry milestones throughout 2015, with a parallel migration path defined for transitioning long-term Argus projects to Calyx. Core functionality was identified through detailed examination of ITM's operational Argus installations, rationalised alongside usability improvements gathered from user stories. The result was a modular architecture of core and loosely coupled add-on software modules delivering everything from multi-format data import/export and complex engineering calculations to geographic sensor mapping, BIM integration, and live webcam feeds.
