The Challenge
The rise of smart speakers and voice assistants created a new frontier for brand interaction. Organisations wanted to reach audiences through Amazon Alexa and other voice platforms, but the design paradigm was fundamentally different from anything in web or mobile. There were no screens to fall back on, no visual cues, and no established conventions for how a brand should sound rather than look.
The technical challenges were equally novel. Voice interfaces required robust natural language understanding, carefully structured dialogue flows, and graceful handling of ambiguity -- all within the strict constraints of platform APIs and certification processes. Brands needed a partner who could navigate both the creative and engineering dimensions of this emerging medium.
Our Approach
Digital Tactics approached voice interface development as a convergence of interaction design, narrative craft, and cloud-backed engineering. We developed a methodology for voice experience design that begins with conversation mapping -- scripting every possible dialogue path before writing a line of code. This ensures natural, engaging interactions that handle edge cases gracefully rather than frustrating users with dead ends.
On the technical side, we built serverless backends on AWS Lambda to power Alexa Skills, handling session management, persistent user state, and dynamic content delivery. We invested in understanding the certification requirements of voice platforms so that our Skills passed review first time, reducing time to market for our clients. The Skill Publisher product emerged from this work, providing a streamlined framework for creating and deploying Alexa Skills at scale.
- Conversation-first design methodology mapping every dialogue path before development begins
- Serverless AWS Lambda backends for scalable, cost-effective voice application hosting
- Platform certification expertise ensuring first-time approval on Alexa and other voice platforms
- Reusable frameworks and tooling (Skill Publisher) reducing development time for subsequent projects
Projects & Clients
Our voice work centred on immersive storytelling and interactive entertainment experiences. The Alexa Storytelling project explored the potential of voice as a narrative medium, creating branching audio stories where listeners made choices through natural speech to shape the plot. This work pushed the boundaries of what was possible on smart speaker platforms, combining professional voice acting with dynamic story engines.
Silent Boom brought audio-first brand experiences to the voice platform, demonstrating how organisations could create meaningful engagement without visual interfaces. The Skill Publisher product consolidated our learnings into a reusable platform for rapid Alexa Skill development, enabling faster iteration and deployment across multiple voice projects. Together, these projects established Digital Tactics as an early mover in the voice interface space, building deep expertise in a medium that continues to evolve with advances in large language models and conversational AI.
